septiembre 2013

¡hola, gente!

since i’ve been toying with the idea of a monthly update, i figured i’d shoot you all a very quick e-mail to highlight a few events and ticket sales happening in september. i’m still adding stuff to the calendar (and there’s much more there than here, natch), but, for those of you looking for a short list, here you go:

this month
6 – 12 sept:    russian ark at film forum. this film is a technical tour-de-force (“a single 96-minute tracking shot” with a cast of literally thousands) as well as an elegant, eloquent meditation on history, memory, and identity. seeing it on the big screen is really the only way to see it. but you don’t have to take my word for it; the village voice, la weekly, variety, and many others have lauded it.

9 sept – 6 oct:    arguendo at the public theater. gatz was pure alchemy, turning what was essentially a staged reading into an engrossing piece of theater (and holding the audience’s—or, at least, my—attention for 8 hours!). i can’t wait to see what they do with this text, nor can new york magazine.

17 – 28 sept:    anna nicole at bam. the reviews of the london premiere were rather mixed (quite nicely synthesized by the guardian), but i can’t resist a slickly produced opera about a buxom texas (putative) gold-digger.

coming up
most of the venues i’ve covered have their fall seasons open to the general public now, so getting tickets *now* for the things you really want to see is a good idea. note the following:

now:    lincoln center’s white light festival has a great line up; akram khan, the JACK quartet, and the tallis scholars are my bets for early sell-outs. the park avenue armory’s big event and certain topic of holiday conversation, the life and death of marina abramovic, is on sale and likely to sell out (between her following and robert wilson’s).

3 sept:    sales open up for all of bam’s next wave festival. if you’re interested in any of the following, you should probably buy soon after 3 sept: bodycast (frances mcdormand!), bleed (tere o’connor!), sider (william forsythe!), sun (hofesh shechter!), and the rime of the ancient mariner (fiona shaw!).

8 sept:    both the new york film festival and city center’s fall for dance tickets go on sale to the general public. tickets to the best of each are usually ridiculously competitive. check out the programs in advance, make your lists (with back-ups), and be on line as soon as they open sales. trust me on this one.

17 sept:    tickets for daniel kitson’s world premiere of analog.ue at st. ann’s warehouse go on sale. his last show, it’s always right now, until it’s later, is one of the most deeply human and beautiful things i’ve ever seen, so i’ll be seeing this new show at least twice. he’s developing quite a following in new york (especially after reviews like this, this, and this) so i’d expect the show to sell out, if not well in advance then certainly after it opens.

abrazos,
pablo
