octubre 2018
¡hola, difus@s!
september felt like a soft launch for the fall season, partly because i didn’t really start seeing shows until late in the month but also because the work i did catch wasn’t particularly strong. mohamed el khatib’s a beautiful ending felt like work in progress but was still worth watching. bill t. jones’ analogy trilogy was remarkable for its compassion and ambition, but it was often overshadowed by the source material (which, to be fair, was incredibly strong). john jasperse’s hinterland was intriguing for its departure(s) from his earlier work—parts of the piece could easily fit into performa’s next edition—but it left me missing the intense physicality and cerebral complexity of fort blossom revisited and within between. similarly, boris charmatz’s 10,000 gestures, while perfectly competent european dance theater (i.e., hewing to all the norms of the genre, for better and worse), lacked the formal elegance and intellectual rigor of his collaboration with anne teresa de keersmaeker. after seeing all that in a week, kyle abraham’s dearest home, whose premiere i’d seen two years ago at the kitchen, was particularly satisfying, having grown more focused over time.
this month’s offerings are particularly promising, as october is arguably the best month on the cultural calendar (january is a close second):
dance: october is full of great dance performances, including some of my all-time favorite choreographers. anne teresa de keersmaeker brings the six brandenberg concertos to the park avenue armory, tere o’connor presents long run at skirball, and trisha brown dance company performs a retrospective of her work at bam. as part of lincoln center’s white light festival, sidi larb cherkaoui reprises sutra (a highlight of the festival's inaugural edition), and akram khan debuts xenos (both men are captivating performers, as well as choreographers). other choreographers / companies whose work i haven't yet seen but hope to this month include beth gill, luciana achugar, nrityagaram, honji wang and sébastien ramirez, lucy guerin, and sankofa danzafro.
performance + theater: since both welcome to the dollhouse and happiness were formative college cinematic experiences for me, i’m very much looking forward to seeing what todd solodnz does on stage with emma and max. other shows that i've already booked are lewiston / clarkston at rattlestick, the things that were there at bushwick starr, and jack & at bam. unitard is back at joe’s pub, and we all could use their comic relief after this week's news cycle. ivo dimchev's p project is part of skirball’s excellent karl marx festival, and i'm ardently hoping it will be closer to his searingly brilliant (and brilliantly searing) fest than his woefully misbegotten 15 songs from my shows. daniel lund holstein’s spare change at dixon place sounds like precisely the kind of critique that interests me (i only hope it's done well). few companies do nouveau cirque as well as circa, who are at bam with humans this month.
film: documentaries top my viewing list this month—the price of everything at the quad, when the beat drops and rodents of unusual size at ifc, monrovia, indiana at film forum, and caniba at the museum of the moving image. carlos reygadas’ sublime silent light plays for one night at lincoln center; not only is it essential viewing, but it should only be seen on the big screen. wim wenders’ classic wings of desire gets an anniversary re-release this month, and the intellectually engrossing donna haraway documentary, story telling for earthly survival (which played earlier this year at anthology), accompanies her book launch at performance space new york. the two features i'm most anxious to see are a season in france at bam and life and nothing more at film forum. among this month’s series of note are contemporary arab cinema and the films of annemarie jacir at bam; catalan cinema's radical years, 1968–1978 at moma; imaging the avant-garde: taiwan’s film experiments of the 1960s and the dying of the light: death in the cinema at anthology; and the imagine science film festival.
music: david lang and a stellar roster of collaborators bring their ambitious mile long opera to the high line at the start of the month, new york city opera performs maria de buenos aires at le poisson rouge, and the met showcases nico muhly’s new work, marnie (which i’ll definitely see, even if i’m getting a bit exhausted with film adaptations on stage). trumpet genius peter evens is playing with several other excellent musicians for the release of his new album, and recent macarthur genius and composer tyshawn sorey presents three nights of work at the kitchen. other new music concerts of note are tomas fujiwara at roulette, axiom at lincoln center, meredith monk at le poisson rouge, roco at the crypt sessions, and kate soper at the miller theatre. for classical fare, julliard415 and yale schola cantorum at lincoln center, stile antico at the miller theatre, orchestre révolutionnarie et romantique and daniel hope at carnegie hall, the knights at bric, and les talens lyriques at the morgan all seem like good bets. other musical events that have my interest piqued are dorian woods' reimagining of janet jackson's rhythm nation 1814, portland cello project's take on radiohead’s ok computer, marc ribot's songs of resistance, and man machine at performance space new york.
art: tony oursler has a massive project taking place this month with public art fund, tear of a cloud. fall weather is perfect for gallery-hopping, and there's no shortage of great shows to see. among them are barbara takenaga, ruby sky stiller, frank bowling, daniel buren, william goldman, vivian springford, joāo maria gusmāo + pedro paiva, judith eisler, wolfgang tillmans, harmony korine, urs fischer, and emily jacir. among the museum shows i’d like to catch this month are constantin brancusi sculpture; odyssey: jack whitten sculpture, 1963–2017; armenia!; on the ropes: vintage boxing cards from the jefferson r. burdick collection; the secret life of textiles: the milton sonday archive; the charterhouse of bruges: jan van eyck, petrus christus, and jan vos; the progressive revolution: modern art for a new india; hilma af klimt: paintings for the future; liliana porter: other situations; and radical machines: chinese in the information age. for the time-constrained (and / or market-curious), the fall edition of tefaf is an excellent way to see a lot of terrific art in an afternoon.
as always, feel free to share these newsletters with anyone you’d like by signing them up here!
abrazos,
