mayo 2022
¡hola, difus@s!
apart from some chelsea galleries (including outstanding shows from walid raad; juan muñoz; michael heizer; melvin edwards, sam gilliam, and william t. williams; emmet gowin; and eva lewitt), i barely made a dent in my to-see list, but what i did see was very, very good. memoria was well worth seeing again (and, perhaps, again and again as the opportunity presents itself), as was the year of the discovery. after the latter, i screened the future and now will be closely following luís lópez carrasco's trajectory; these two films are brilliant. the drag seed was delightfully camp—and, perhaps because it came from chicago, was full of the heart that so much of the new york art world lacks. sasha waltz and guests' in c was a fine, if not transcendent, evening of dance (but, in all fairness, i really wasn't able to transcend my disenchantment with the venue).
this month's calendar is in full bloom (hence the delay in getting it all together):
art: new york art week (which sounds a bit repetitive, really) is on, and even if you're not participating in the projected $2+ billion of sales, you can see a lot of great work at fairs like independent, nada, tefaf, and others (including frieze later in the month), as well as in auction previews (free and open to the public!) at christie's, phillips, and sotheby's. all this commercial activity also brings out top-notch gallery shows. away from all that (yeah, not entirely), a lot of great public art, such as black atlantic and sun seekers, is also going up as we head into summer.
dance: this month, the joyce hosts three terrific companies la dance project, stephen petronio company, and (my favorite) trisha brown dance company, and new york city ballet performs a four-part stravinsky festival (i, ii, iii, iv). several venues that i haven't yet made it back to are presenting work that's more than enough reason to return: ogemdi ude at danspace project, nicole mannarino at invisible dog, donna uchizono at baryshnikov arts center, and the future dance festival at 92y.
performance + theater: though broadway has, in the wake of the pandemic, become much more adventurous (e.g., strange loop), my heart is still very much with off off (off off off...) broadway. the shows i'm most looking forward to this month are the divinity supply company (because i've yet to see anything by bread and puppet theater and quite admire their ethos) and notes on killing seven oversight, management and economic stability board members (the title alone!), as well as the unmissable justin vivian bond's ode to spring. also worth looking into are who killed my father at st. ann's, bullshit and camp bonfire series at ars nova, true stories at cherry lane, a ruin at jack, puppetopia at here, the legend of the waitress and the robber (여종업원과 남자도적) at dixon place, and goldie, max, and milk at 59 e 59.
music: carnegie hall has two very promising shows this month (and, yes, many others worth considering): julia wolfe's anthracite fields and evgeny kissin and veniamin smekov's "the unquenchable torch." some innovative opera is coming to stages intimate (self-defined circuits at here and american lyric theater at national sawdust) and monumental (akhnaten and hamlet at the met). john zorn has three premieres, and the international contemporary ensemble performs new works by kate gentile, fay victor, and peter evans (a personal favorite) at roulette. blank forms presents sabisha friedberg, amina claudine myers trio, and dawuna. three other shows of note are balún at joe's pub, new york philharmonic's "after the storm" program at lincoln center, and omar offendum's "litte syria" at bam.
film: summer is prime film season, but we're getting a head start with an amazing array of new films and series this month. at the very top of my list is miguel gomes' latest, the tsugua diaries, followed closely by nuri bilge ceylan's breakthrough distant (which will tide me over until his latest feature is released next year) and michelangelo frammartino's il buco (especially after the two lópez carrasco films last month). a number of films and series this month address urgent political issues and history: "it happens to us: abortion in american film," "in images, behind the camera: women's political cinema, 1959–1992," cane fire and fanny: the right to rock. other series of note include "human conditions: the films of mike leigh," "alexandria smith selects" (i pretty much want to see every one of her choices), filmafrica and the new york african film festival, "movies from earth." and "all them witches: inspirations for lux aeterna selected by gaspar noé" (on the occasion of lux aeterna's run).
as always, you can share this newsletter as freely as you'd like by just with anyone you'd like, directing people here.
un abrazo,
