in march, i did nothing... so we'll just jump right into april's offerings:
dance: both la mama and 92y host dance festivals this month, wonderful opportunities to explore contemporary choreography. faye driscoll brings new work to new york live arts, kyle abraham presents a promising program at the joyce, and ccn ballet de lorraine performs work by miguel gutierrez at skirball (pardon the mistaken inclusion on last month's calendar). kathy westwater is on at the chocolate factory, ogemdi ude is on at gibney, and martita abril, andros zins-browne, and mayfield brooks are in danspace's draftwork series.
film: a new kelly reichardt film is always worth celebrating, and showing up has me especially excited for her take on the art world. i'm also eager to see the eight mountains (in no small part because conxita casanovas gave it a good review), r.m.n. (despite some so-so reviews, i'm a committed fan of mungiu and his contemporaries), and human flowers of flesh (i'll follow any beau travail connection). other features high on my watch list are 32 sounds, pilgrims, and minute bodies: the intimate world of f. percy smith. among this month's series of note are "jean rouch: dialogue and dissent" (full disclosure: the curator is a dear friend from grad school and was my introduction to rouch's cinema), "jeanne dielman and its roots," "rob tregenza: thinking with cinema," "rialto at 25," and "old school kung fu fest, 10th anniversary: swordfighting heroes edition."
performance + theater: some of the work i most want to see this month deals quite directly with the classes i'm currently teaching: smart (artificial intelligence and the human condition), television (communication technologies and the public sphere), and this purple fucking pot (branding and consumer culture). other shows that merit our attention are tao of glass, the hunting gun, sex witch the musical, shadow/land, american century – part 1, an old man with very enormous wings (bring the kids!), and the strange undoing of prudencia hart (i was not a fan of sleep no more, but i'm willing to give this a go).
music: for new and experimental music, check out wild up's celebration of julius eastman, dragonchild's album release, claire rousay and fuji||||||||||ta's show, moor mother's concert (co-presented with new sounds, which is essential listening), renaissance string quartet, zosha di castri's "nightcap" (and the ny phil program with her work that precedes it), and the meitar ensemble. for early music, check out capella pratensis, stile antico, and les arts florissants, and for music from other traditions, look into bassekou kouyate & ngoni ba, pepe romero, sahba motallebi, and silkroad.
art: i'm long overdue for some museum time, and both the bronx and queens museums have shows i'd like to see: abigail deville and john ahearn and rigoberto torres at the former, lyle ashton harris, tracey rose, and aliza nisenbaum at the latter. among the manhattan museum shows, cecily brown at the met, lawrence abu hamdan at moma, and jaune quick-to-see smith at the whitney are my top priorities. outside the museums, right now you can hardly go wrong just roaming around any of the gallery neighborhoods. some galleries / art spaces i haven't been to in a while and hope to visit soon are 80wse, andrew kreps, gagosian (uptown), hauser & wirth (chelsea), jack shainman, james cohan, karma, miguel abreu, paula cooper, perrotin, ppow, simone subal, and white columns.
