septiembre 2023
¡hola, difus@s!
to borrow the title of one of my summer reads, todo empieza en septiembre. despite some troubling cutbacks*, new york's cultural calendar really feels like it's back in full swing.
dance: seeing johnny cruise mercer (who's a terrifically engaging performer) at gibney this summer left me wanting to see more dance (though the hyper-collaborative form left wondering about "the artist as platform," cf., benjamin). both the crossing the line and fall for dance festivals showcase a lot of great work—and with very affordable tickets. other shows that have my interest piqued are bijayini satpathy at baryshnikov arts, thierry thieû niang and benedict nguyễn and anh vo at invisible dog, wanjiru kamuyu at chocolate factory, the dynamitexperience at jack, and tedted performance group at the center for performance research.
film: i'll admit to thoroughly enjoying my summer barbenheimer experience, but a superstar: the karen carpenter story – doctor atomic double-header is probably more my style, which is why i'm really looking forward to this year's the new york film festival, featuring work from alice rohrwacher, victor erice, radu jude, aki kaurismaki, nuri bilge ceylan, wang bing, steve mcqueen, and many more. given this month's 50th anniversary of the "first september 11th," the first year / el primer año, salvador allende, and the battle of chile are essential viewing, other non-festival features i'd like see are the trial (el juicio), hello dankess, and invisible beauty. among this month's series of note are "sembène," "korea cinema's golden decade: the 1960s," "black wave to white ray: yugoslav film of the 1960s," a three-part program of janie geiser<'s films (1, 2, and 3), and a tribute to sinéad o’connor (whose legendary snl performance i've long wanted to reprise as a halloween costume, but with portraits of elon musk and his ilk).
performance + theater: the flick remains one of my most memorable theater experiences, so i'm quite eager to see annie baker's infinite life (note: she's also got a film at nyff). i'm also keen to see annie dorsen's prometheus firebringer, as i remember liking a piece of work and am generally interested (critically, that is) in ai-engaged art. also on stage and worth looking into are 9 kinds of silence, job, psychic self-defense, crispr: the musical!, mahinerator (which feels especially timely as we head into an electoral cycle), and macbeth: the match (shakespeare and wrestling? yes!). even if you haven't read how you get famous or followed the drag race global take-over, you'll find much to enjoy at the annual bushwig festival.
music: whenever new sounds plays one of julianna barwick's concert recordings, i invariably stop whatever i'm doing to just listen, so her concert at national sawdust is a high priority this month. john zorn's 70th is being widely (and rightly!) celebrated with performances at roulette, national sawdust, and the miller theatre, and john cage's sonatas and interludes kick off the crypt sessions' season. before the "arthur russell: city park" concert at the nyc aids memorial, i'd love to catch ted kerr and michael r. jackson's "infection melodies + silence" at roulette. newtown odyssey and song of the nightingale are both intriguing experiments in new opera (more so, say, than dead man walking—but i do appreciate the met's increased investment in contemporary productions). other concerts worth highlighting include the julliard orchestra conducted by jörg widmann, raj bhimani's program of germain tailleferre, samuel torres featuring the bergamot quartet, son del monte, sara serpa and andré matos, and yungchen lhamo.
art: armory week, anchored by the armory show, starts the fall art season off with a flurry of fairs, including spring / break, independent, art on paper, clio, photofairs, and the month-long nada house on governor's island (all followed, later in the month, by the affordable art fair). september's also great for ambling about any of the city's gallery districts, where big shows abound. some of the shows i'm hoping to catch are daniel arsham, taeuber arp, ed clark, njideka akunyili crosby, edmund de waal and sally mann, sam gilliam, william kentridge, nicholas party, philippe parreno, laure prouvost, ugo rondinone, and wolfgang tillmans. museums and other non-commercial spaces also have many (and many new) shows worth a look, such as ruth asawa, jonathan lyndon chase, barkley hendricks, ken jacobs, "only the young: experimental art in korea, 1960s-1970s," ed ruscha, méllany sánchez, a. l. steiner, ahd "tree and serpent: early buddhist art in india, 200 bce – 400 ce,"

un abrazo,
p
* the similarities between these two institutions (in terms of artistic direction, development strategy, etc.) over the past decade are well worth analyzing in depth...
