in the interest of time (and jet lag recovery), i'll get right to this month's highlights and save talking about what i've seen so far this season for the next issue…
film: films from cannes and other festivals are starting to roll in. after last month’s the substance (which i enjoyed) and megalopolis (which i'm not sure i'll bother with), palme d'or-winning anora (i am very interested in sean baker's oeuvre), golden bear-winning dahomey (everyone should see diop's prior feature, atlantics), and guy maddin's cannes debut rumours (film comment was a little meh on this one, but i'm excited) all arrive on screen. other features i'm looking forward to are the secret world (because josiah mcelheney), nurse unseen (especially because of the current political discourse on immigration), mediha (grand jury prize at 2023 doc nyc), and ¡viva la muerte!. among this month's series and festivals of note are "the ongoing revolution of portuguese cinema" (particularly for the miguel gomes films and the chance to revisit the gorgeous the ornithologist and heart-breaking what now? remind me), the always worthwhile newfest, "out of the shadows: rediscovering mohammad reza aslani", "kill yr landlords" (joe's apartment!), "landscape cinema: poetics and politics", ny shorts international film festival, and the new york greek film expo 2024.
music: i really appreciate the met's contemporary turn, and i especially appreciate their bringing ainadamar to the stage this month (i'm also glad to see golijov back). roulette celebrates the 40th anniversary of john zorn's cobra and presents holland andrews' parallels, national sawdust hosts david lang and bill morrison's darker with ensemble signal, and the julliard percussion ensemble performs at peter jay sharp theater. october also has several great early music concerts on offer (with many programs including contemporary compositions): fourth wall ensemble, novus, the sixteen, sphinx virtuosi, and voces8. other concerts worth looking into are "afromoderism: music of the african diaspora", the habibi festival, karim sulayman and sean shibe, la banda chuska, mariza, and nova materia.
performance + theater: the builder's association has a great track record of taking on contemporary issues (e.g., house / divided, a incisive portrayal of the subprime mortgage crisis, and i agree to the terms, some of the best online theater i've seen), so atlas drugged is at the top of my list this month. also on my list are babe, the christine jorgensen show, in the amazon warehouse parking lot, lakeplay, showgirl, we live in cairo, and the 2024 la mama puppet festival.
dance: the forgetting of the hiv/aids crisis (as manifest among the college students i teach) makes still / here newly urgent. other shows i'd love to see are botis seva, dada masilo, dd dorvillier, nycb's "contemporary choreography" program, national ballet of ukraine, nadia beugré, and niall jones.
art: the art world really hits its fall stride in october (and the weather makes gallery hopping even more enjoyable). among the gallery shows i'd like to see this month are "fibration: poking back", giorgio morandi, hilary pecis, jenny holzer, jesper just, laurie simmons, manoucher yektai, margot bergman, mschf, nan goldin, peter fischli and david weiss (whose work advice is golden), and pieter schoolwerth. beyond the galleries, shows i'm hoping to catch are "code switch: distributing blackness, reprogramming internet art", egon schiele: living landscapes, make way for berthe weill: art dealer of the parisian avant-garde, nour mobarak: daphne phono, reimagine: himalayan art now, siena: the rise of painting, 1300-1350, and the way i see it: selections from the kaws collection (i much prefer kaws the collector to kaws the artist).
