junio 2017
¡hola, difus@s!
a bit telegraphically, as i’m running late in getting this out (again) and low on writing reserves (due to a major project i had to deliver two days ago)… ain garden and josh quillen’s radicals in miniature is an extraordinary work, as much for its interrogation of history and memory (cf., gavin butt’s “happenings in history, or, the epistemology of a memoir”) as for its critical reflexivity about status and success in art-making. i saw it twice and want to see it more; i hope it will get a longer run somewhere soon. (and, i love josh quillen, but his performance did have me thinking about derek jarman’s take on straight masculinity.) i also saw samara a second time and was even more moved by how profoundly poetic a work it is; may sarah benson continue to direct richard maxwell’s plays! keeping with the theme of repeat viewings, i hope to see unitard’s show again this month because their trenchant humor is something i can’t get enough of.
other highlights in may included beckett’s happy days, which is an incredible play in itself and featured a phenomenal performance by dianne wiest. tarkovsky’s stalker is a masterpiece; he truly has few, if any, peers. werner herzog is also in a league of his own, and he’s exactly the same on stage as he is on screen; his take-down of elon musk (underreported here) was a delight. astrid hadad is utterly charming on stage, too, with phenomenal costumes and wry political commentary. burden was a loving portrait of the artist, even if it skirted the politics of his practice, maurizio cattelan: be right back gave me a much deeper appreciation of his work, and afterimage was a searing indictment of the polish state’s control of art under communism.
before beach season truly begins next month, we’ve got a lot to enjoy:
dance: a friend and i were recently talking about how we feel like we haven’t seen enough dance lately, and this month offers plenty to address that paucity. tops on my list is kyle abraham’s dearest home, an “interactive dance performance that explores cultural views and exchanges about love and the absence of love”—which, given his sensitivity and grace, should be sublime. while ballet is usually a low priority for me, alexei ratmansky’s whipped cream sounds like the dance equivalent of the perfect summer movie. new york live arts has a terrific showcase of several choreographers and companies, symphony space has a showcase of young choreographers, and dixon place has three with different themes: “moving men,” “fast forward,” and “translate (voices of dance)” (1, 2, and 3). the showcase i most want to see, though, is at jack: "explode! queer dance".
performance + theater: having missed “justin vivian bond shows up” over memorial day weekend, i would love to see mx. bond in “swishy dishy and gay” at le poisson rouge for pride weekend (who better, right?). i’m finally seeing annie baker’s the antipodes, just before it closes mid-month, and my other high priority is sister sylvester’s maps for a war tourist, partly because it promises a departure from the company’s “trademark chaos” (a phrase that usually signals sloppy, self-indulgent and self-aggrandizing theater, e.g., charles mees) but mostly because we have so much to learn—and so much we should have learned before last year’s elections—from turkey. the other shows i’m hoping to catch are no great society at bushwick starr, raw bacon from poland at abrons, miss julia at la mama, the reception at here, and limits at bam.
film: besides “beach,” my primary association with summer is “film,” as the two places i most like being in the are on the sand and in the cinema. those two interests combine inboys in the sand (a welcome corrective to logo’s latest abomination, dismally reflective though it is of the state of so much queer culture and politics). i’m also keenly interested in seeing funeral parade of roses (a japanese contemporary of the queen? yes, please!!!) and at least some of“cross-dressing and drag on screen.” moma’s series, “a new golden age: contemporary philippine cinema,” should be amazing, not least because it features lav diaz’s from what is before and norte, the end of history. (i’m really irked that the woman who left was gone so fast last month.) joao pedro rodrigues' the ornithologist hits screens at the end of the month, and i can’t wait to see it.
music: new york city opera’s presentation of angels in america (yes, in operatic form) is the musical performance i’m most looking forward to this month, with meredith monk’s new cellular songs also quite high on my list. ensemble lpr has an outdoor program that should be beautiful (and it’s free, so #datenight). other shows that have my interest piqued are the secret quartet and ernst reijseger at joe’s pub, “facets of schubert” at the morgan, solar flare and luna lab and ensemble connect at roulette, and lesley flanigan and mariel roberts at issue project room.
art: i’m long overdue for a run through the museums, so the following shows are on my to-see list this month: rembrandt at the frick, anicka yi at the guggenheim, robert rauschenberg at moma, ian cheng at ps1, marsden hartley and caravaggio at the met (and adrian villar-rojas on the roof), and elaine cameron-weir at the new museum. in the galleries, i’d like to see mike mandel, sylvia plimack mangold, cameron jamie, mel bochner, alex katz, and pooh kaye.
as always, the long list is below, and you can add anyone you’d like to the mailing list here. happy pride (andalusian and onion style)!
abrazos,
p
