mayo 2024
(junio + julio + agosto = vacaciones)

¡hola, difus@s!

in the interest of time, i’ve got just three quick notes on the last month. ken loach has an extraordinary ability to see the world so clearly and yet still hold out hope for it; the old oak is as unflinching as r.m.n. and even more tender than the other side of hope, and loach’s portrayal (and practice) of compassion in and through restraint is deeply moving. the wooster group’s artistic integrity and technical virtuosity, on full display in symphony of rats, never cease to impress and inspire me; every production underscores their rare commitment to a unique vision and, as such, is a gift to audiences and artists. the long play festival, itself a gift to brooklyn and music lovers everywhere, was a firm reminder that i need to see more live music.

as the spring season comes to a close, we’ve got a lot to enjoy:

performance + theater: late spring tends to bring out the kind of work i’m more drawn to (perhaps because the tony nominations are over), and two shows i’m particularly looking forward to are dave malloy’s three houses (ghost quartet remains one of my favorite theatrical experiences) and raja feather kelly’s the fires. other shows i’ve got my eye on are chopped liver & unions (part of the “brits off broadway” series), iceboy, no, but i’m definitely in a better place than i’ve been in a long time, priestess of twerk, small acts of daring invention, and wild project’s summerworks 2024 festival.

film: metrograph has this month’s most essential film series, “american landscapes: the cinema of kelly reichardt” and “chris marker’s le dépays, as well as other compelling series like “dream with your eyes open” and “visionary auteurs: five decades of mk2”. another series worth checking out is “atlas variations: the moving-image work of charles atlas” at anthology. among this month’s features that i’m hoping to catch are evil does not exit, hidden master, a prince, robot dreams, self-portrait in 23 rounds: a chapter in david wojnarowicz’s life, slow, and time of the heathen. i’m also looking forward to film comment’s podcast coverage of the cannes film festival.

music: among this month’s most promising musical events are operas (in the most expansive sense of the word): robert ashley’s foreign experience and a divine echo at roulette, shall we gather at the river at the park avenue armory, an american soldier at the perelman arts center, and (most conventionally) orfeo ed euridice at the met (where i finally saw fire shut up in my bones last month). other shows that pique my interest are blank forms’ eighth anniversary, decodainternational contemporary ensemble, “loeffler’s forgotten octet”, and tammy faye starlite.

dance: kyle abraham (of whom i’m definitely a fan) curates the “a delicate ritual” platform at danspace, la mama hosts its annual dance festival, and new york live arts showcases new work. new york city ballet features william forsythe on its “classic nycb ii” program, and chelsea factory presents travesty doll play (after coppélia).

art: accompanying may’s fair frenzy—and major auctions, whose previews definitely are worth visiting, at christie’s, phillips, and sotheby’s—are numerous gallery shows of note: adam pendleton, amy sillman, daniel walbidi, elizabeth murray, eva hesse, francis bacon and lucian freud, hugh hayden, kapwani kiwanga, niki de saint phalle, paul klee, rachel eulena williams, ronny quevedo, sahara longe, tamiko nishimura, tanya merrill, tara donovan, wayne thiebaud, and yves klein. off the commercial circuit, shows i’m hoping to see are isaac julien (whose contribution to the current whitney biennial is a highlight) and latoya ruby frazier at moma, walton ford at the morgan, grounded in clay: the spirit of pueblo pottery and petrit halilaj’s roof garden commission at the met, and the word-shimmering sea: diego velázquez / enrique martínez celaya at the hispanic society.

a full calendar for the rest of the month follows, and you can share this with anyone you’d like by signing them up here.

un abrazo,
