abril 2024
¡hola, difus@s!
so far, this spring’s been pretty good on both stage and screen, if perhaps better on the latter than the former. suzanne bocanegra’s honor was one of best things i saw on stage since the last issue (and her pre-show conversation with claire bishop made me an even bigger fan of both); trisha brown company’s program at the joyce (particularly, working title) was the other. any opportunity to see anne teresa de keersmaeker’s choreography (and especially her performing it) is a gift, even if this work felt more for her than for the audience. similarly, even william forsythe’s lesser works are better than so much other choreography, as the nederlands dans company demonstrated.
charles busch’s blend of camp and critique is always a delight (even though ibsen’s ghost did pale in comparison with the confessions of lily dare). teeth (featuring some stellar performances) was a riot, far more fun than i’d expected, which left me wondering whether it might be broadway-bound. i’ll be curious to see how illinoise fares on broadway after last year’s dancin’ (peck’s choreography is adequate, but doesn’t really stand up—much less, add—to sufjan stevens’ music, sung by an exquisite trio, cf., stephen petronio’s work with the music of nick cave).
radu jude’s do not expect too much from the end of the world (with a tour-de-force performance by ilinca manolache) confirms his status as one of the smartest filmmakers working today, and jessica hausner’s club zero is just as fiercely intelligent and fearlessly critical. alice rohrwacher’s la chimera is a sumptuous visual feast (and a sly critique of the cultural heritage industry), and lois patiño’s samsara is equally engrossing (even when, per the film’s invitation, one watches a portion with one’s eyes closed) and surprisingly tender.
since we’ve only got three weeks left in the month, i’ll keep try to keep the following suggestions focused.
performance + theater: april’s awash in new theater with new york city fringe 2024, the 16th annual united solo theatre festival, ?!: new works 2024, and the 2024 apex festival. the shows i’m most hoping to see are the wooster group’s a symphony of rats and dynasty handbag’s the bored identity, and i’ve also got my eye on fingers & spoons: the ins & outs of an open marriage, here there are blueberries, and sauna boy.
music: in celebration of earth month, julliard and lincoln center are presenting john luther adams’ crossing open ground. for more new music, check out gryphon rue and jeffrey schanzer at roulette, bridget kibbey with samuel torres and ismail lum as part of carnegie hall city-wide, and robert sirota’s string quartets at the kaufmann center. for more classical and early fare, you’ve got constantinople and accademia del piacere at music before 1800, stile antico at the miller theatre, isidore string quartet at 92y, blake denson at the morgan, and hilary hahn at ny phil. for even more music, look into tiergarten from death of classical and the ny oud festival at joe’s pub.
film: ken loach’s latest (and probably last) feature, the old oak, tops my to-see list this month (and is accompanied by several other titles in film forum’s retrospective of his work). moma’s essential “new directors / new films” series is on through the end of the week. other series of note include “divine intervention,” “hamaguchi i & ii,” and “quebec-core.” other features that have my interest piqued are egoist, the feeling that the time for doing something has passed, old narcissus (i love what anthology is doing with this series), stress positions, we grown now, and yi-yi (because i’ve never seen it but feel i should have ages ago).
dance: after the de keersmaeker, forsythe, and peck work i’ve seen this season, i’m eager to explore the work of chorographers and companies i’ve not yet seen: beth gill, mx oops [nonfatal_error], daniel pettrow, young boy dancing group, and the programs curated by movement research and pioneers go east.
art: among the current shows at galleries, museums, and other exhibition venues that i’m hoping to catch are scott csoke, “the dictionary of accepted ideas,” jim dine, “el dorado: myths of gold,” arthur jafa, loie hollowell, lynn hershman leeson, graham little, robert mapplethorpe, ian mwesiga, delcy morelos and ettore spalletti, mary lovelace o’neal, gordon parks, zak prekop, rudolf stingel, “threads to the south,” martin wong and paul p, marian zazeela, and luigi zuccheri.
a full calendar for the rest of the month follows, and you can share this with anyone you’d like by signing them up here.
un abrazo,
p
