septiembre 2018
¡hola, difus@s!
summer’s clearly not over (wtf with this heat wave?!), but the fall season is upon us…and it’s quite promising.
below is, as usual, a short list of what interests me most, followed by a full calendar of everything that interests me. i’ve expanded the list of venues whose calendars i consult; the list is still rather idiosyncratic. one of the season’s biggest surprises is the programming at skirball, which is punching far above its weight artistically and presenting shows i’d more expect from much larger organizations. if you think there are other venues i should be looking at, by all means, let me know! so, onto the fall…
dance: two of my favorite choreographers come to the joyce at the month’s end, john jasperse (whose work i haven’t seen in far too long) and kyle abraham (whose dearest home i have seen before but am delighted to be seeing again). i’m also quite eager to see boris charmatz, having only seen him once before in a collaboration with anne teresa de keersmaeker (who is one of next month’s highlights). though i’m not as crazy about bill t. jones, i do have a lot of respect for him and am looking forward to seeing his marathon analogy trilogy. other choreographers to look for this month are trajal harrell and raja feather kelly, along with those featured in joe’s pub’s dance now festival and dixon place’s fast forward and crossing boundaries showcases.
performance + theater: having spent a lot of time watching (and rewatching) rupaul’s drag race—the editing alone rewards multiple viewings, but there’s so, so much more going on—i am thrilled (and slightly daunted) by the convergence of wigstock, bushwig, and dragcon on this month’s calendar. joe’s pub will be featuring shows by wigstock performers and all-around amazing artists justin vivian bond and joey arias, as well as justin sayre makes the case for america: a love-in to get you through (maybe the dnc could tap him for some messaging help?). other performances that pique my interest are the culture of now at dixon place, oye! avant garde night at jack, happy birthday, marsha! at the kitchen, and what remains in fiaf’s crossing the line festival. that festival also has two theatrical works i’m eager to see, a beautiful ending and unwritten letters. other plays that are high on my list are scraps at the flea, the arts at la mama, an intractable woman at 122cc, and rated black: an american requiem at new york theatre workshop.
film: though i’ve sworn it off for years, this year’s new york film festival’s slate has enough to make want to brave the ticketing hassle and viewing hordes. however, there’s so much good stuff on screen elsewhere (and so much of the nyff slate already has distribution secured) that i might just focus on series like icarus films at 40 at metrograph, hip-hop on film 1979–1986 at the newly renovated film forum, three by hong sang-soo: all in a year’s work at the museum of the moving image, kino polska: new polish cinema at bam, and women of the west and audre lorde on screen at anthology. a couple of politically themed documentaries also have my attention: separated by birth and zero tolerance (a double-header) at lincoln center, a dangerous idea: genetics, eugenics, and the american dream at city village cinema, and matangi / maya / m.i.a. at ifc. (ok, that last one’s maybe a stretch for this category…but i’ll never forget now-defunct stylus magazine’s description of her first album: "a swaggering, spitting, utterly contemporary album of politically dissident, sexually forthright anglo-sri lankan dubstep bhangra hip-pop idm in which m.i.a. stars as protagonist, antagonist, chanteuse, mc, exotic schoolgirl tease, graphic artist, chastiser of the immoral, and fun-loving london-living party girl.” #goals, yo.)
music: the performance i’m most looking forward to this month is the jack quartet’s modern medieval show as part of the angel’s share, a concert and performance series at the green-wood cemetery (well worth a visit even without the art) organized by the brains behind harlem’s crypt sessions. the month features some terrific new music elsewhere: the resonant bodies festival at roulette, proving up at the miller theatre, miranda cuckson and michael hersch at national sawdust, and leila bordreuil at issue project room. for more classical fare, check out the bel canto evening in the guggenheim’s works & process series, the orpheus chamber orchestra or the bernstein centennial celebration at carnegie hall, the first of this season’s salons at the baryshnikov arts center, or the philharmonic’s performance of bruckner’s symphony no. 8.
art: two major artists have films on screen this month: yayoi kusama is the subject of kusama – infinity at film form, and xu bing is the director of dragonfly eyes, his first feature film, at moma. metrograph screens films of jack smith to coincide with the closing of his exhibition at artists space. if you haven’t caught it yet, the david wojnarowicz exhibition at the whitney should be a priority—and don’t skip the complementary exhibition at nyu’s bobst library. (sadly, the p.p.o.w. complement, which i really loved, has closed.) after this heat wave passes, the weather should be prime for checking out public art; the parks department has a full directory, or you can check out the best-of lists from curbed, time out, or the new york times. museum shows closing soon include ana mendieta at the sugar hill children’s museum of art and story, giacometti at the guggenheim, and selections from the souls grown deep foundation at the met. museum shows opening this month that i want to see as soon as i can include soul of a nation: art in the age of black power at the brooklyn museum, sarah lucas: au naturel and marguerite humeau: birth canal at the new museum, delacroix at the met, and everything is connected: art and conspiracy at the met breuer. late september is prime gallery-hopping season (far too much to parse, really), and the art book fair is always a good time (and good people-watching).
