¡felices fiestas, difus@s!
i’m still mulling over the (unfortunately few) shows i’ve seen this month, so i’ll save those thoughts for the next issue and get this out in advance of turkey day...
dance: several promising shows close out the year's dance calendar: dear lord, make me beautiful, palabre/s en mode marron & rite de passage || solo 2, "new dances: edition 2024", the book of love, dime quién soy, and "30-30-30". the hard nut, though, is my top priority—it's just everything i want this time of year. nut/cracked and les ballets trockadero de monte carlo bring even more fun to the holiday season.
film: pedro almodóvar continues his work in english with the much-anticipated (at least for me) feature the room next door, mike leigh returns to cinemas with hard truths (don't miss the special screening of his secrets & lies), as do paul schrader with oh, canada and werner herzog with theater of thought. i'm oddly curious about joshua oppenheimer's musical the end (maybe a double-header with emilia pérez?) and also interested in 2073, the order, and vermiglio. for a great summary of the year in film, look to momi's "curators' choice 2024: the first batch".
music: i'm probably most looking forward to justin vivian bond's holiday show, which has become a tradition for us, but there's plenty more great music to end the year. among the new music offerings (holiday and non) are david lang's poor hymnal and little match girl passion, john adams' el niño: nativity reconsidered, two world premieres by william parker, thurston moore, catalytic festival 2024, forrm, and mono. for early and classical fare, check out "a french baroque christmas", handel's messiah, musica sacra, the magic flute, the prague philharmonic, skylark vocal ensemble, and the tallis scholars.
performance + theater: i only caught parts of nature theater of oklahoma's monumental life and times, but those parts, along with pursuit of happiness, have no president at the top of my to-see list this month, followed by college fun, extinction! the musical, machinal, meetings research, and bread + puppet's the beginning after the end of humanity circus and the possibilitarian imperative everything show & gray lady cantata #9. if you're looking for more holiday fare, check out chloe saves christmas, a christmas carol, christmas in nickyland, the jo lynn butterfly country hour of sunshine christmas special, and a murray little christmas.
art: while still chipping away at my list of museum exhibitions, i’m hoping to catch at some, if not most, of these other shows: álvaro urbano, bill viola, brook hsu, francis alÿs, janet cardiff, “gee’s bend: my way today”, “the lady and the unicorn: new tapestry”, lorna simpson, mark leckey, matthew barney & alex katz, melvin edwards, “on television”, paul p., richard serra, robert irwin and larry bell, and tina girouard.
