junio 2022

¡hola, difus@s!

may was a fantastic month on screen and almost as good on stage, at least from what i saw. il buco was nearly wordless but completely wondrous (so i've got to see le quattre volte), distant was even better than i remembered (so i want to revisit the rest of his oeuvre), and the tsugua diaries, with its estival lightness and conceptual rigor, surpassed my admittedly high expectations (so i am seeing it again). i also really loved listening to film comment's podcast coverage of this year's cannes (so i'm anxiously awaiting the arrival of kelly reichart's showing up, albert serra's pacifiction, joao pedro rodrigues' will-o'-the-wisp, jerzy skolimowski's eo, and lucien castaing-taylor and verena paravel's de humani corporis fabrica, among others...).

on stage, untitled toast was both satisfying (another fascinating exploration of black oral tradition and history using the wooster group's record album interpretation form) and promising (a work in progress but already remarkably assured in both production and performance). i am always grateful for opportunities to explore trisha brown's work, so i deeply appreciated her company's fine presentation of foray forét and astral converted (still processing it...). notes on killing seven oversight, management and economic stability board members was a little too narratively unfocused and conceptually messy (even a bit too much for work in progress), but it was admirably sincere in attempting to grapple with the complexities of identification and decolonization.

as we head into summer, we've still got a lot on the calendar:

film: apart from a few feature releases—we, watcher, official competition, and flux gourmet (the latter two i'll be curious to compare with the tsugua diaries as commentaries on art-making)—the most exciting cinematic events this month are series and festivals. for pride month, quad cinema has a spectacular selection entitled "pride rewind: queer cinematic landmarks and breakthroughs." for us iberophiles, there's "fantaterror en español" at metrograph and "new tales from portuguese cinema" at anthology (where "jim fletcher on screen" highlights the lesser-known work of one of new york's greatest actors—i'm an ardent fan). for more new films, there's "open roads: new italian cinema" at film at lincoln center and bam cinemafest at bamcinématek (which is also presenting "in the images, behind the camera: women's political cinema, 1959-1992").

performance + theater: having not yet made it back to playwrights horizons, i'm very curious to see corsicana, as much for its themes (all very close to m heart) as for its setting (home to a lot of extended family). cascando (i've heard great things about pan pan theatre but have yet to see them), white on white, and quince also have my interest piqued. apropos of pride month, "criminal queerness festival" at lincoln center, "squirts" at la mama, and hyperfantasia and "queer butoh 2022" at brick are worth considering. two other festivals to look into for emerging talent are "reflections of native voices" at new york theatre workshop and "ant festival" at ars nova.

dance: after hearing an interview with tamara rojo on one of my favorite radio programs / podcasts, i'm definitely seeing akhram khan's giselle (and will not, i promise, whinge about the venue afterwards). doug varone and biba bell are both on stage this month, and i've quite enjoyed their work in the past. hudson river dance festival and irish arts center dance and music festival 2022, which take place back-to-back, are great opportunities to see dance outdoors (and for free!). some other shows of note include bill t. jones' curriculum ii at montclair state, martha clarke's god's fool at la mama, mayfield brooks' sensoria: an opera strange at danspace project, and aram khachaturian's of love and rage at american ballet theatre.

music: death of classical's programming this month is excellent (so we can forgive march's tristan perich show): wendy sutter plays "philip glass: songs and poems i & ii," publiquartet presents "what is american," and gallanticus and the decoda ensemble perform sarah kirkland snider's mass for the endangered. sarah kirkland snider is also curating a "nightcap" program and has a world premiere with the new york philharmonic this month. as a sucker for early music, i thrill at the idea of a josquin de prez marathon at the cloisters. i'm also intrigued by bare opera's firesongs at chelsea factory (a new-ish venue i've yet to visit). among this month's musical pride programming, check out the "chamberqueer pride festival" at national sawdust and the homages to gay icons peggy lee and judy garland at carnegie hall (thank jinkx monsoon for recently revitalizing the latter's place in popular culture).

art: after the past month's frenzy, the art world slows down a bit (at least in the city), so i'm hoping the revisit the whitney biennial and see the other museum shows i've missed before they close (e.g., faith ringgold at the new museum, charles ray at the met). i'd like to start working my way through nyc parks' art guide, weather permitting, as well as some critics' picks (e.g., kazuko miyamoto at japan society, peter van agtmael at bronx documentary center, robert rauschenberg at gladstone, shikeith at yossi milo). i'd also like to see anthology's art(-adjacent) programming: "nam june paik's radical fun," new red order, and "broadcast: visual aids screening series".

as always, you can share this newsletter with anyone you'd like, directing people here.

un abrazo,
p
