febrero + marzo 2020
¡hola, difus@s!
since i'm running really late with this issue, i'm combining this month and the next (and then i need to focus on a languishing conference paper)...
so far, 2020's off to a good start, at least culturally... i was bit trepidatious about not i by samuel beckett, but it proved to be one of the most thought-provoking and truly communal evenings of theater i've had. queens row was a bit uneven, but it still had a lot of what i like from richard maxwell. in all candor, i didn't get the residents when i first saw them (almost twenty years ago), so i genuinely appreciated the opportunity to see them again at moma—and i have a newfound (and now profound) appreciation for their work.
cunningham featured some remarkable archival footage, but it borrowed too heavily from both beuys and pina (and yet lacked their rigor and sensitivity). les miserables and beanpole were deeply satisfying films and very deserving of the buzz they generated at cannes last year (and, frankly, at least a portion of the praise that's been heaped on the palm d'or-winning parasite). the agnes denes show at the shed was phenomenal...i just wish it had been somewhere else.
matthew bourne's swan lake is a handsome production but egregiously overrated; mark morris' the hard nut (which premiered four years earlier) is a much more subversive re-telling of a classic, and lloyd newson's enter achilles (which premiered the same year) is a far more trenchant exploration of gay identity and a more thorough critique of toxic masculinity. anne teresa de keersmaeker's reflection on work and life, mitten wir im leben sind, was as rigorous and gorgeous as i'd hoped and even more personal and profound than i'd expected.
the spring season is in full swing now, so the calendar is full of great options:
film: though the awards season is over, there's a lot of good cinema on offer. i'm an ardent pj harvey fan, so i'm particularly eager to see pj harvey: a dog called money. new films from kelly reichardt (accompanied by related series at bam and the museum of the moving image), hirokazu koreeda, ken loach, and eliza hittman are cause for excitement, and two films that i quite enjoyed at the new york film festival and hope to see again, the whistlers and vitalina varela, are finally arriving, along with last year's cannes sensations bacurau and portrait of a lady on fire. among the upcoming series of note are "climate crisis parables," "first look 2020," "neighboring scenes: new latin american cinema," and "rendez-vous with french cinema 2020."
performance + theater: if you missed the flick a few years ago at barrow street theatre, you should definitely take advantage of julliard's production; the play is brilliant, tickets are very affordable, and supporting emerging talent is always a good thing. seeing the confession of lily dare (also a must-see!) at cherry lane theatre reminded me how much more i enjoy smaller-scale venues, so i'm very much looking forward to drew droege's happy birthday, doug! at soho playhouse and heather christian's oratorio for living things at ars nova. i'm quite curious about classic stage company's new productions of dracula and frankenstein, bedlam's new production of the crucible, a peregrine falls and the antelope party at wildproject, and ryan rafferty's ivanka 2020 at joe's pub.
music: new sounds (djs beat algorithms!) has made me big fan of zoe keating, so i'm psyched to see she's playing two shows at national sawdust. holland andrews' contribution to performa 19's "weirdo night" has me looking forward to seeing her at issue project room. long-time favorites the jack quartet perform at both national sawdust and roulette, and the philip glass ensemble plays "music in twelve parts" at le poisson rouge. other upcoming new music concerts i'd like to catch include prism quartet (with soprano genius tony arnold) at roulette, missy mazzoli and kelly moran at the kaufmann music center, and nadia sirota at lincoln center. for early music, check out maria vespers at the park avenue armory, academy of sacred drama presented by music before 1800, quicksilver at the miller theatre, or julliard415 at lincoln center—and there's plenty of music that falls between "new" and "early" below.
dance: three european companies are presenting interesting programs at the joyce in march: ballet vlaanderen with works by sidi larbi cherkaoui and akram khan, scottish ballet with a piece by angelin preljoçaj, and lyon opera ballet with work by anne teresa de keersmaeker. fiaf, peak performances, and skirball add even more european dance to the calendar. for more local and emerging talent, dixon place's "8 in show," "fast forward," and "under exposed" showcases are worth a look, as are julliard's "spring dances." i used to live above a flamenco instructor in andalucía, so i'm intrigued by the flamenco on stage at la mama, city center, le poisson rouge, and skirball.
art: several new museum exhibitions have opened (or will soon): sahel: art and empires on the shores of the sahara at the met, gerhard richter: painting after all at the met breuer, peter saul: crime and punishment at the new museum, agnes pelton: desert transcendentalist at the whitney, judd at moma, countryside, the future at the guggenheim, josé parlá: it's yours at the bronx museum, and african arts–global conversations and climate in crisis: environmental change in the indigenous americas at the brooklyn museum. the armory show anchors a blitz of fairs—the art show, independent, spring / break, clio, art on paper, and scope—and brings out a lot of good gallery shows (check out nada's gallery open!).
a full calendar follows, as always, and you're welcome to share this with your friends by signing them up here.
abrazos,
p
