marzo 2025

¡hola, difus@s!

un día más, un día menos (as laura barrachina used to open each covid lockdown episode of “efecto doppler”)...

since i’m a bit behind this month, we’ll get right to the month’s offerings (and save the critical retrospection for next month)…

dance: having missed batsheva dance company’s last visit to nyc, i’m very much looking forward to seeing momo at bam this week. among the other shows that have my interest piqued are makini at new york live arts, donna uchizono and bebe miller company at danspace project (¡feliz 50!), the flamenco festival program at city center, guillermina quiroga tango company at roulette, boy blue at lincoln center, spring dances at julliard, and the “fast forward” and “8 in show” programs at dixon place.

film: i’m a miguel gomes fan and so am delighted that grand tour is finally gracing our screens. lately i’ve also been wanting to revisit atom egoyan’s 1990s work (calendar is one of my all-time favorite films), so i’m curious about how his latest, seven veils, compares. other new features i’ve got my eye on are misericordia, on becoming a guinea fowl, secret mall apartment (i first heard this story on 99 percent invisible), and you burn me (accompanied by the series “matías piñeiro selects”). i’m also really excited to revisit post tenebras lux (not only is this title a motto for our moment, but i’m also a carlos reygadas fan), part of metrograph’s noteworthy “in good faith” series. other series worth looking into this month are “first look 2025,” “rendez-vous with french cinema,” and “welcome to suburbia.”

music: among this month’s new music highlights are “composing while black,” kaufman music center’s contemporary music festival, kronos quartet, and “our future voices: music and technology of the americas.” for classical and early music, check out julliard415 and julliard orchestra’s “the beethoven project,” stile antico’s “the prince of music,” gustavo dudamel and yuja wang with the ny phil, and leif ove andsnes. other concerts worth considering are la plazuela (i’ve been hooked since “mi tarara”), tarta relena (along with astrid sonne and jules reidy), dane terry, kim david smith, and a tribute to poly styrene.

performance + theater: at the top of my list this month are nyatt school redux (the wooster group can pretty much do no wrong in my book), malaise dans la civilisation (i just rewatched the century of the self with my students so am interested in how dufrense and lepage engage with freud), and bunny bunny (raja feather kelly’s the fires was quite good). other shows and festivals worth noting are amerikin, amm(i)gone, bubble schmeisis, the cherry orchard (nina hoss!!!), “lab: stripped,” purpose, spark theatre festival, and “spring breakers.” (i’d be remiss if i didn’t also mention that daniel kitson—of whom i am an ardent fan—has a new online venture, an accumulation of failure.)

art: this month’s biggest event, in terms of scale (and, probably, buzz), is anne imhof’s doom. other shows that i’m hoping to see are beatriz cortez x rafa esparza, betty parsons, cy twombly, deborah kass, etel adnan, joan jonas, george condo, guerrilla girls, henry darger, jessica stoller, laura owens, lucas samaras, “moving targets,” nick cave, pablo dávila, “past as prologue,” robert grosvenor, “the writing’s on the wall,” todd gray, and zach harris.

as always, you’ll find more in the calendar below (so, please, explore!), and anyone who’d like to join the list can sign up here.

un abrazo,
p
