octubre 2022
¡hola, difus@s!
though the city's culture calendar is certainly back to pre-pandemic levels, my culture-vulture stamina clearly is not...i barely made a dint in the list of things i wanted to see. even so, returning to venues like the park avenue armory (where monochrome (afterlife)'s musical and visual joys weren't completely undermined by the superfluous dance) and skirball (where john jasperse projects' visitation was intermittently sublime but aggressively restrained). on screen, petrov's flu had some dazzling (and even touching) moments but kept stumbling over its own ambition, leaving me wanting to rewatch hard to be a god. joão pedro rodrigues' will-o'-the-wisps was every bit the delight i'd hoped for (though i should have left before the q&a because lucrecia martel has set the bar impossibly high for artists' post-show talks).
film: in addition to the new york film festival (where i'll definitely be seeing pacifiction this week), newfest, workers unite film festival, and imagine science film festival are all happening. among the month's series of note are "'ask any buddy' and the golden age of all-male adult film" (#gayhistorylesson), "yes: the films of sally potter," "whole lotta herzog," "andrea varejão selects," and "isabelle huppert" (#fangirling). one of the features i'm most looking forward to, face, is playing as part of the essential "tsai ming-liang: in dialogue with time, memory, and self" at moma. other features that are high on my list are khrustalyov, my car!, the computer accent, and aftersun.
music: the new york philharmonic returns to its home with san juan hill (and new art by nina chanel abney and jacolby satterwhite), vicky chow celebrates her release of philip glass etudes at roulette, and the orpheus chamber orchestra presents 20 world premieres at carnegie hall. xavier foley and nathan schram play at national sawdust, international contemporary ensemble and the iranian female composers association perform at skirball, and roomful of teeth curates a nightcap program at lincoln center. for early music (and more), check out "music for the chapel royal" at st. luke's of the fields, vox luminis at the miller theatre and / or music before 1800, and voces8 at the kaufman music center. also of note are the habibi festival and mariachi herencia de mexico at joe's pub, purbayan chatterjee with rakesh chaurasia and ojas adhiya at the kaufman music center, and nuaeen with mojgan shajarian, pejman hadadi, and sourena sefati at roulette.
performance + theater: robert ashley's automatic writing is high on my list for this month (both that morning thing and quicksand captivated me). though siti company's engagement with mcluhan didn't thrill me, i'm still curious about their radio macbeth. both the village: a disco musical and poof!(or what the fairies know) look like tons of fun, and other shows that have my interest piqued are camp siegfried, complicity, last gasp: a recalibration, montag, my broken language, only gold, peerless, and take the plunge.
dance: compared to the rest of the season's offerings, dance has yet to recover from the pandemic's impact, but we're fortunate to have legendary yvonne rainer's "last dance" on stage this month. other promising shows include unavailable memory: in conversation with cunningham and cage, an all stravinsky program at new york city ballet, trajal harrell's maggie the cat, latasha barnes' the jazz continuum, fouad boussouf's näss, and the "dance hole" showcase.
art: the art book fair returns this month, amid a bounty of gallery shows and museum exhibitions. among those i'm most eager to see are "real corporeal" at gladstone, "big data (networking the art world)" at postmasters, fernanda gomes at peter freeman, fortune and folly in 1720 at new york public library, just above midtown: changing spaces and yve laris cohen: studio / theater (fine was terrific, even if p.s.122 was less so), and, if i can find the time, these suggestions from artnet.
three quick notes before i go: (1) apologies for last month's broken hbo link, which resulted from the unfortunate departure of todo lo otro at the start of september—but you can still see maricón perdido, which i also recommend—, (2) bam will no longer appear in this newsletter, and (3) if you know any arts organizations that would like to work with a group of arts administration grad students, let me know!
un abrazo,
