septiembre 2019

¡hola, difus@s!

the last two months of summer passed by much too quickly, and amid some travel, a workshop, and a new job, i caught far, far less than i’d hoped (hence the absence of commentary in this issue). i do, however, really regret missing “i don’t care if we go down in history as barbarians” and ardently hope it will be online soon…

this fall is shaping up to be an excellent season, and september gets us off to a particularly auspicious start:

dance: anne teresa de keersmaeker’s fase comes to new york live arts at the end of this month, and everyone should see it. i saw it for the first time five years ago and was absolutely awestruck, so i’ll see it at least twice during this run. jerome bel’s (another personal favorite) isadora duncan premieres in the crossing the line festival, which also features germaine acogny & mikaël serre and a number of other performances (highlighted below) that make it one of this season’s most important events. other dance performances worth looking into are the dance now festival at joe’s pub, the balanchine + wheeldon program at new york city ballet, liz gerring at the barynshikov arts center, and siti company & streb extreme action (who take on the dubious task of adapting charles mee’s work) at montclair state. (note: if you're thinking about catching next month's fall for dance festival at city center, you'll want to get tickets as soon as they go on sale this month, 11am on the 8th.)

performance / theater: the crossing the line festival brings three shows that i’m quite eager to see: 600 highwaymen’s manmade earth (which continues exploring the themes of the fever), fanny de chaillé’s the disorder of discourse (#foucaultfanboy, if you’ve found his work off-putting, i honestly recommend this guide for giving it as second—or even first—chance), and peter brook & marie-hélène estienne’s why? (in the hands of almost any other director, this kind of inquiry would be insufferably portentous, but these two can make it transcendent). two other shows that are equally high on my list are novenas for a lost hospital at rattlestick and antigone at the park avenue armory. sarah jones' sell / buy / date is back at new york live arts (see it! i’ve seen it twice and may well see it again), and bushwig makes its annual appearance at the knockdown center. also piquing my interest are as much as i can at joe’s pub, make believe at second stage, sincerity forever at the flea, heroes of the fourth turning at playwrights horizons, and magic agency chapter 4: bro-tox at la mama.

film: bam’s series “on memory” closes at the start of the month, and the new york film festival opens at the end of the month. though i’ve long found the latter terminally frustrating for its poor logistics and unadventurous programming (issues still unresolved in this edition), the two galician films in this year’s line-up, fire will come and endless night, will have me giving the festival another chance. other series i have my eye on are “sci-fi visionary: piotr szulkin” and “two free women: lily tomlin & jane wagner” at lincoln center and “show & tell: takashi makino” and “lutz dammbeck” at anthology film archives. other films that are high on my to-see list include where’s my roy cohn?the golden glovemonos, and américa .

music: death of classical’s september offerings both look terrific: “the instant and the eternal” opens the crypt sessions series, and “listz: poetic and religious harmonies” kicks off the angel’s share season. the annual resonant bodies festival, a thrilling showcase of new music and musicians, comes to roulette, du yun spends a week at the stone, national sawdust presents an evening of women composersporgy & bess opens at the met, and the hunger plays at the kaufmann music center with the support of the irish arts center.

art: i’ve got a long, long to-see list left over from this summer, so i’m loathe to add much to it. a few things that i am adding, though, are “the life and times of alvin bastrop” at the bronx museum, josiah mcelheny’s "observations at night" at james cohan gallery (for which blank formshas curated a terrific series of performances), pope.l’s conquest in downtown manhattan, micheal wang’s extinct in new york on governor’s island, the group show "sex crimes" at clampart, and sam gilliam at dia:beacon.

below is the full (and, as always, very idiosyncratic) list of noteworthy events, and you can share this with anyone you’d like by signing them up here.

abrazos,
p
