febrero 2019
¡hola, difus@s!
despite the surfeit of performances last month, i spent much more with film than anything else. among the best, the favourite was a wicked delight, shoplifters was exquisitely devastating, and happy as lazzaro was both trenchant and tender. if beale street could talk isn't as poetic as moonlight, but if it's barry jenkin's sophmore slump, he has a great future ahead of him. cold war used music quite cleverly to index historical change but left me wanting (specifically, wanting to re-watch tabu—if the trailer doesn't entice you, read this). touch me not was sometimes rather self-obsessed and non-cohesive but still managed to be engrossing and, at least in places, compelling (the director would do well to study richard foreman's once every day). what is democracy? has enough great footage to be an excellent, incisive political documentary...but the director's solipsistic self-insertions are abjectly deleterious (and, indeed, illustrative of what ails democracy in general and the left in particular).
off-screen, anne teresa de keersmaeker's verklärte nacht was as gorgeous as i'd hoped for—well worth seeing on two consecutive nights—and malpaso dance company's program at the joyce was, despite one solo, excellent. both bleach and barbu were much fun. the former's narrative could have been a bit more taut (and, in some places, better written), but the star's charisma and the production's scale more than made up for the textual shortcomings. cirque alfonse is always a good time, and it was great to see them camp it up with a lively crowd (one particular audience, noticeably absent at their last show, was quite present at this one). i managed to catch the sarah lucas' show at the new museum and the stephen varble show at the leslie lohman museum just before they closed, and i sorely regret not having gotten to them sooner. i'll definitely try to spend some more time with bruce nauman's retrospective in these last two weeks of its run at moma (which deserves much credit for all the work that went into judson dance theater: the work is never done which i barely caught). god made my face: a collective portrait of james baldwin at david zwirner is terrific. both dana schutz's current show at petzel and rodney graham's show at 303 galleryare solid, and several of the pieces in mateo lopez' show made me wish i had the space (and budget) to collect his work.
though this month's brief, there's plenty of fill the calendar.
film: there's something for every romantic (or anti-romantic) this month, from "programmer's notebook: on love" at bam to "velentine's day at metrograph," and even "valentine's day massacre" at anthology. the series i'm most looking forward to, though, are "poets of pandaemonium: the cinema of derek jarman and henry jenning," "ron rice / jack smith," and "race, sex, & cinema: the world of marlon riggs." one documentary i'm quite eager to see is the unicorn at anthology (yes, it's a fine month for queer film!), and moma's annual festival of nonfiction film and media arrives at the end of the month. film forum screens cristina gallegos and ciro guerra's birds of passage (their embrace of the serpent is phenomenal), and, for more in latin american cinema, check out the raymundo gleyzer series at anthology and "neighboring scenes: new latin american cinema" at film society (which is also hosting the noteworthy "film comment selects").
music: there are more than a few string quartets that have my interest piqued this month, including quartet for the end of time presented by death of classical, the heath quartet and the kronos quartet at carnegie hall, and the navarra string quartet at lincoln center. for early music (which i haven't heard live in far too long), check out new york polyphony, and for live film music, check out jordi savall and le concert des nations' presentation of tout les matins du monde or red room orchestra's programs of music from twin peaks and wes anderson. i'll definitely be seeing peter evans at national sawdust later in the month, and other new music concerts i'd like to get to are ned rothenberg and inbal segevat roulette, modney and wubbels at arete, and wang lu at the miller theatre.
performance / theater: isabelle huppert returns to the city in atlantic theater company's production of the mother (but i probably won't see it until next month—tickets seem to be going fast). julliard has a trio of student productions which look promising (and are quite reasonably priced): queens, red speedo, and mother courage. at the signature theater, by the way, meet vera stark and boesman and lena sound interesting, as do bonnie's last flight at new york theater workshop, good friday at the flea, and switzerland at 59 e 59. for more experimental fare, look into the china fringe theater festival at la mama, recent alien abductions at walkerspace (the title alone makes me want to re-watch mysterious skin), and rocco, chelsea, adriana, sean, claudia, gianna, alex at here.
dance: kyle abraham's the runaway at new york city ballet is top of this month's dance list, followed by raphaëlle boitel's when angels fall at montclair state university. also on this month are camille a. brown & dancers and gallim at the joyce, recirquel company at bam, and chris ferris & dancers at roulette. anthology film archives continues its merce cunningham centannial, and the baryshnikov arts center explores his legacy.
art: next month will be a frenzy of art fair activity, so i'll probably take it easy on this front. however, i do want to spend some time with the ulrike ottinger show at bridget donahue, "revolution from without" at the 8th floor, "a crack in everything" at albertz benda, "a simple song" at the camera club of new work, "auguries cast aside" at karma, "psychedelic galactica" at lesley heller, "make believe" at magenta plains, and the nancy holt show at dia:chelsea.
as always, you can share this information with anyone you'd like by signing them up here. stay warm!
abrazos;
paul
