enero + febrero 2022
¡feliz año, difus@s!
while the very start of 2022 didn't go entirely as planned (but some traditions are, thankfully, pretty pandemic-proof), getting back to the city and compiling this issue's calendar has drastically improved my outlook.
dance: we've got a lot of great dance on the calendar, and at the very top of my to-see list are kyle abraham and pam tanowitz at bam and oona doherty at irish arts center, followed very, very closely by molly lieber & eleanor smith at baryshnikov arts center, donald byrd at montclair state, and botis seva and l-e-v at the joyce. though i don't really frequent nycb, their "new combinations" and "visionary voices" programs are well worth supporting (anything to get lincoln center's performing arts on par with its film programming in terms of balancing contemporary and classic...). i'd also love to catch some flamenco (soledad barrio, siudy garrido, nélida tirado, or flamenco vivo tablao), not least because of lola flores' resurgence in spanish pop culture..
performance + theater: i didn't see nearly enough theater last year, so i'm eager to start making up for it this year. fortunately, three companies i admire on stage soon: elevator repair service with seagull at skirball, the civilians with whisperhouse at 59 e 59 and courtroom at joe's pub, and the wooster group with an encore of last fall's the mother at the performing garage. other shows that have my interest piqued are space dogs at mcc, wolf play at soho rep, shhh and english at the atlantic, just for us at cherry lane (see also whiteness: part one (and other portraits) at la mama), and the same at irish arts center. the performance (though not exactly theater) that i'm most excited about seeing soon is cage shuffle marathon at la mama; i saw paul lazar in suzanne bocanegra's when a priest marries a witch, and i can't wait to see what he does with this material.
film: i've got at least three december releases still on my must-watch list, but several new releases are also high priorities: who we are: a chronicle of racism in america at film forum, a simple passion at the quad, and why is we americans?, air doll (new kore-eda!) and the unmaking of a college at ifc. upcoming noteworthy series include "archive fever: women's cinema from south-west asia and north africa" and "homecoming films" at anthology, "new york indie film festival" at the new ohio theater, "neelon crawford: the geometry of abstraction" and "carte blanche: adam pendleton" at moma, "the films of maria mészáros" at film at lincoln center, and "animation first" (celebrating five years!) at fiaf.
art: three shows i'm looking forward to seeing are rashaad newsome's assembly at the park avenue armory (check out his 2012 shade compositions and 2014 five), tomás saraceno's particular matter(s) at the shed, and christian hincapié, emily jacir, and rose salane's return sale. much like my film watchlist, my museum visit-list keeps getting longer, with several new(ish) shows piling on to those i need to catch before they close: faith ringgold at the new museum, charles ray and jacques louis david at the met, the hare with the amber eyes and jonas mekas at the jewish museum, and reduce, reuse, recycle: recent architecture from china at moma. with all that to see, i'll default to artforum for gallery priorities: jacob jackmauh and lisa mcginn at art lot, chris marker at peter blum, and jimmy raskin at miguel abreu.
music: winnowing this month's extensive (see below!) offerings feels positively sisyphean. jon batiste's "social music" and the afrofuturism festival at carnegie hall look terrific, as do me'shell ndegeocello's residency at symphony space and william hooker's "silver fleece" at roulette. accompanying the met opera's rigoletto on the calendar are new york city opera's the garden of the finzi-continis, heartbeat opera's fidelio, and lincoln center theater's intimate apparel. among the early / classical music highlights are hesperus, william christie and julliard415, jordi savall, alexis pia geriach and simone dinnerstein (the latter also appears with reneé fleming and uma thurman at carnegie hall), and st. luke in the field's program of chiara margarita cozzolani. for newer and / or experimental fare, check out the philadelphia orchestra at carnegie hall, prism quartet (with tony arnold—who is to my middle age as dawn upshaw was to my post-college years) or cleek schrey and weston olnecki at roulette, axiom (playing both january and february) at lincoln center, kamala sankaram & bombay rickey at the kaufmann center, toby driver as alora crucible with gyan riley at le poisson rouge, and lesley flanigan, christopher tignor, and tristan perich at national sawdust.
with so much great live art, my (perennial) new year's resolution to read more is proving particularly challenging—but that's what summer's for (i tell myself)!
