septiembre 2022
¡hola, difus@s!
as summer is winding down, the fall season is heating up, with what feels almost like pre-pandemic programming. so, let's just dive right in...
film: the new york film festival starts at the end of the month, but ticket sales start next week (for VIPs and those with much more discretionary income than i). among the films i'm most hoping to catch there are alcarràs (if you haven't seen estiu '93, you should), de humani corporis fabrica (leviathan felt like the visual equivalent of chris watson's audio work, which is a very good thing), eo (especially after all the buzz about isabelle huppert's cameo), pacifiction (serra interests me), and will-o'-the-wisp (i'm a fan, and the trailer!). outside the festival, a number of intriguing documentaries are playing: searchers and bulletproof at the museum of the moving image, a medical-themed double-header at anthology, invisible demons at film forum (the director's prior feature, machines, is also worthwhile), and my imaginary country at ifc (especially in light of this weekend's constitutional referendum in chile—see also pablo larraín's no). among the features, old and new, on my radar this month are duffer (please may this "narrow rooms" series continue!), medea, dirty dancing (read the notes; this could be amazing), terra femme (including a live version), petrov's flu, peter von kant, and lakota + spirits (part of the rolex mentor and protege arts initiative). some of this month's series are "burning bright: new french filmmakers 2022" at fiaf, "the films of beth b and scott b" and "beth b retrospective" at moma, "karen lamassonne" at anthology, and "working class musicals" at bam.
music: the musical performance i'm most looking forward to this month is monochromatic light (afterlife) at the park avenue armory because i'm really interested in sorey's work (but i'm also gravely concerned about the peter sellars + regg roc gray involvement because flexn was not good). mabou mines has a new play / opera with music by philip glass, new camerata presents a double program of faust et hélène and l’heure espagnole, and the met brings lady macbeth of mtsensk and medea to their stage. julliard415 puts on a program of british composers, daisy press sings hildegard von bingen in the catacombs of green-wood cemetery, roulette celebrates peter kotik's 80th birthday with his many, many women (a six-hour vocal-instrumental composition based on text from gertrude stein), and the guggenheim reflects on recent history with "the covid-19 variations: a piano drama." other shows worth looking into include international contemporary ensemble at joe's pub, brooklyn rider at the stone, wynton marsalis at jazz at lincoln center, stephanie lamprea and cassie wieland at roulette, efraín rozas at the chocolate factory, and jon batiste at carnegie hall.
performance + theater: with school back in session (and student loan debt in the news), parent plus loans at dixon place and peerless at 59 e 59 feel quite timely. as an admirer of both arendt and baldwin, i'm curious about the banality of evil (cf., judith butler's take) at the tank and baldwin and buckley at cambridge at the public (if you can't get tickets to see elevator repair service's take, you can watch the original). i caught a work-in-progress performance of get your ass in the water and swim like me this summer and definitely recommend it. other shows i'd be keen to catch if possible are american (tele)visions at new york theatre workshop, i'm revolting at the atlantic theater, this and that at the bushwick starr, marie it's time at here, prince hamlet at montclair state, and this beautiful future at cherry lane. bushwig is always a good time—and a good reason to reach nicole pasulka's chronicle of the brooklyn drag scene. (honestly, this little amal spectacle has me reaching for my guy debord, but some great venues are supporting it...)
dance: relative to the categories above, the dance calendar is a bit sparse this month. john jasperse projects (i'm a fan, even if the last show i saw wasn't their strongest) is on at skirball, as are meg stuart / damaged goods. the annual fall for dance festival is on at city center, and sean curran company and darrah carr dance are on at the irish arts center. bijayini satpathy performs at the met museum, robyn orlin performs at new york live arts, and michael j. love performs at the shed.
art: a cluster of art fairs help get the visual arts season started: the armory show, independent, spring / break, salon zürcher, and art on paper. many of the city's galleries have new shows set to open around the fairs, so it's a great time to wander around your preferred gallery district (but i'll focus on galleries more next month). among the museum exhibitions opening this month are wolfgang tillmans at moma, "hear me now: the black potters of old edgefield, south carolina" at the met, "time-management techniques" at the whitney, and "ritual and memory: the ancient balkans and beyond" at the institute for the study of the ancient world. i really need to see the robert colsescott show at the new museum before it closes next month, and my inner luddite is dying to see "analog city" at the museum of the city of new york. and, lest i forget, two performance art events of note are sarah cameron sunde's 36.5 / new york estuary in astoria and jordan reed's flamboyan at the brick theater.
enjoy the long weekend and the start of the new season, and feel free to share this as you'd like!
un abrazo,
p
