septiembre 2021
¡hola, difus@s!
aaaand we’re back! well, kind of… this issue's a little delayed, as fall season announcements have, understandably, come out a bit later than usual. many venues are starting their seasons late, with more limited programs, and / or (encouragingly) in collaboration with other organizations. visual art and film have been back to quasi-normal for longer and, thus, have more on offer (indeed, almost at pre-pandemic levels!), but i'm hopeful that dance, music, performance, and theater will catch up soon.
art: after frieze's return earlier this year (proof of concept, perhaps?), a number of other fairs—the armory show, independent, spring / break, and more!—are back this month, and our friends at artnet have a handy guide for navigating them, as well as a terrific list of must-see gallery shows opening this month.* other gallery shows i'm hoping to catch (including some summer shows i've not yet seen) are "the post-engineers" at miguel abreu, martine syms at bridget donahue, sonia almeida at simone subal, "recovery" at ppow, and alice neel at david zwirner. among the museum shows closing and opening soon that i want to see are lynn hershman at the new museum, huguette caland at the drawing center, "this must be the place: latin american artists in new york, 1965-1975" at the americas society, and "rebel, jester, mystic, poet: contemporary persians — the mohammed afkhami colection" at the asia society. the shed has two interesting installations opening this month, drift's fragile future and ian cheng's life after bob, and bam brings the 2019 venice biennale's golden lion winner, sun & sea, to brooklyn.
film: anthology film archives' re-opening is definitely one of this month's highlights, with adam baran's short "trade center" followed by a discussion on cruising, two other 9/11-related films by holly fisher (out of the blue and a question of sunlight), "bicentenario and the traces of history," "the annotated field guide of ulysses s. grant (+ the films of jim finn," and "alan licht's 'common tones: selected interviews with artists and musicians, 1995-2020'" (which includes kelly reichardt's phenomenal old joy and two tony oursler films). the quad hosts bruce labruce's latest provocation, sainte-narcisse, and the most beautiful boy in the world, ifc plays the year of the everlasting storm and civil war (or who do we think we are), film forum screens in balanchine's classroom and little girl, and angelika presents i'm your man and the eyes of tammy faye. tsai ming-liang's days is on at the museum of the moving image if you're a devoted fan (if not, all his earlier work is a much better use of your time), and moma has two great series this month, "veinte por veinte (20 for 20): celebrating cinema tropical" and "magnolia pictures at 20."
music: the met commemorates 9/11 with verdi's requiem, as does abrons arts center with onyx collective's "holy ground land of two towers." for new music lovers, paola prestini's houses of zodiac, mary halvorson's amaryllis and belladonna, allison loggins-hull's "diametrically composed," and simone dinnerstein's an american mosaic are all worth looking into. other musical events of note include "how the work begins: a revolutionary concert" and "from silence to celebration" at lincoln center, the met's productions of fire up in my bones and boris godunov, taka kigawa at le poisson rouge, moor mother at the kitchen, harriet tubman (brandon ross, melvin gibbs, jt lewis) / jjjjjerome ellis & holland andrews at issue project room, and lenny pickett at roulette.
dance: i have sorely missed seeing dance live (i didn't manage to catch the few outdoor performances that have taken place over the last year), so i feel compelled to see everything i can now. perhaps the biggest event this month is bill t. jones' deep blue sea at the park avenue armory (for which the recent documentary can you bring it: bill t. jones and d-man in the waters would be good preparatory viewing). new york city ballet returns to lincoln center, with a program that includes alexei ratmansky (for those interested in contemporary work) and another that features classics (for the traditionalists out there). the joyce reopens with ragamala dance company and alejandro cernudo. skirball, in partnership with lower manhattan cultural council and battery park city authority, presents a 9/11-themed work by eiko otake, and lincoln center commemorates the anniversary with buglisi dance theatre.
theater + performance: while broadway is back (and i wish them the best), i'm partial to smaller venues, many of which are reopening this month. topping my list are bedlam's persuasion at the connelly theater, the last of the love letters at atlantic theatre company, sanctuary city at new york theatre workshop, and between the bars at here. the annual alt-drag festival bushwig returns, lincoln center pays tribute to john lewis and c. t. vivian, justin hicks performs cross over at jack, robert dubac's one-man the book of moron hits the stage at soho playhouse, and neal brennan's unacceptable plays cherry lane theatre.
the full calendar is below and, as always, anyone else who's interested can sign up here. if you're not yet comfortable with returning to indoor performances, please consider getting a membership (which means more than a one-off donation) to any of the arts organizations that have been struggling to survive—and if you want suggestions, i have plenty.
last, but not least, many, many thanks to you all for confirming your interest (and sharing such kind words!)!
un abrazo,
p
* i have no affiliation (even social!) with artnet, but i do consume a lot of their content (#occupationalhazards)...
