febrero 2023

¡hola, difus@s!

though january was a strong start for the year's cultural calendar, it was more of a soft launch for me—but a very promising one. the two best things i saw were from spain: carla simón's alcarrás and israel galván's solo. the former is a tender (simón's sensibility is exquisite) portrait of rural family life and a trenchant critique of a "green energy revolution" that questions neither its consumptive demands nor its extractive dynamics. the latter was, quite simply, one of the best performances i've seen, especially in recent memory, with its combination of rigor and humor, virtuosity and generosity, reflexive criticality and unabashed joy. i was utterly transfixed, and i can't help wondering if his pioneering dance work hasn't directly influenced musicians like rodrigo cuevas, niño de elche, and tarta relena. the rest of what i saw was good (and, javier marías' last novel, which comes out in english later this year, is great), but, in the interest of time...

music: having not yet seen caroline shaw perform live, i'm eager to catch her with sö percussion at 92y or on her own at kaufman music center. other new music shows of note include, "how to fall apart", "ekmeles sings stockhausen", "in c", tyshawn sorey and adam rudolph, and the free ear festival. for more classical (yes, some of it contemporary, i realize) and early music, filharmonie brno, cuarteto casals, voces8, gesualdo six, blue heron, "from the new world", and "an evening with yo-yo ma" are all worth considering. among the other concerts that have my interest piqued are "archivo de guatemala", claudia acuña, edna vasquez, afro dominicano, and mon laferte and las mujeres del viento florido.

performance + theater: theater was regrettably absent from my january partaking, so i'm quite intent on seeing some this month. high on my list are on set with theda bara (which closes out the exponential festival, because i enjoyed i'm looking for helen twelvetrees and haven't managed to see david greenspan since), the village, a disco daydream (i <3 nora burns), la machine de turning (timely for one of my new classes this semester), and "[internally screaming]: comedies on capitalism". also vying for my time and ticket budget are han!, the race of the ark tattoo, 1+1, public obscenities, the seagull / woodstock, ny (i <3 parker posey), and role for initiative (jesse green please don't come). we also have a lot of opportunities to see and support new / developing work (as we should!): "love, science, and magic: new plays from emerging playwrights", "everything everywhere all at brunch" (i'm stealing this title), "barn series 2023", "now in process", and "gestating baby volume 3" (which features spinoza!).

film: albert serra's pacifiction arrives this month, and i cannot wait. other features i'm hoping to see are searchers, father was a peculiar man, let it be morning, and one fine morning. among this month's series are "filmcraft: bradford young, asc", "films from iran for iran", "michael snow (1928-2023)", "lives of performers: the films of yvonne rainer", and "snubbed: great movies, no nominations" (because EVERYONE should see the women at some point in their lives).

dance: batsheva dance company arrives at the end of the month and is the performance i'm most excited to see, but several shows before it also look worthwhile: the "21st century choreography" program at new york city ballet, dean moss at danspace project, naomi tanner at the brick, and dohee lee puri arts at gibney. the annual "dance on camera" festival at film at lincoln center is essential for dance enthusiasts.

art: the galleries are chock-a-block with quality exhibitions this month, including a lot of long-time personal favorites and less familiar names i'm eager to get to know (andrea fraser, bernadette corporation, charles atlas, dan flavin, engineering for human spirit, felix gonzalez-torres, gilbert lewis, gordon matta-clark and pope.l, hans haacke, ja'tovia gary, jeni spota c., jennifer bartlett, john baeder, shala miller, tom fairs / david shoerner, tom of finland, "my way, a gathering", and "video store"). beyond the galleries, i'm also looking forward to seeing "comparative hell: arts of asian underworlds""jumama manna: break, take, erase, tally", "political / subjective maps: anna bella geiger, magali lara, lea lublin, and margarita paksa", "queer love: affection and romance in contemporary art", and "she who wrote: enheduanna and women of mesopotamia, ca. 3400-2000 b.c."

as always, the full calendar lists much, much more below, and anyone you know who'd also like to subscribe can do so here.

un abrazo,
p
