april and early may were a bit less relentless work-wise than march was, so i got to see a bit on screen and stage. both showing up and the eight mountains plumbed the challenges of just being there, as a friend, as a family member, as an artist, and while i thoroughly enjoyed both, the former's scale and focus made it much more trenchant and compelling. the human pyramid and r.m.n., made some six decades apart, incisively explored racial politics, the former with more optimism (owing, in part, to the transformative experiences of its actors) and the latter with more pessimism. the ways these pairs of films illuminated each other (e.g., the gendered differences between the first two films, the post/colonial economic relations in the latter two) and caused me to reflect on other works (e.g., the third act of bad luck banging or looney porn in relation to r.m.n.'s town hall scene, an absolutely surreal screening i attended of a remake of the diner by a billionaire art collector in relation to the human pyramid) renewed my commitment to see more next season.
among the other things i saw were de humani corporis fabrica (unflinching and unsettling), jaune quick-to-see smith (a beautiful show i need to spend more time with) and josh kline (conceptually terrific but often materially heavy-handed) at the whitney, and charles busch (a treasure i hope will bring another of his productions to the stage soon).
with the academic year (finally!) ending, i'm looking forward to seeing much more and taking some time off:
performance + theater: late spring and summer (after the obies have been handed out and the tony nominees have been announced) is probably my favorite season for theater, as the offerings just seem more interesting (at least for me). at the top of my list are two works with roots in classic spanish literature: bernarda's daughters and fuente ovejuna. several other plays also merit looking into: the beautiful lady, crumbs of joy, demons, foxes, love and science, race: the movie: the play, a simulacrum, and we were promised honey. dynasty handbag is a comic genius, so her new performance at pioneer works should be great (and for more in that vein, look into a probably disastrous experiment & the bottom's bible and two foreskins walk into a bar). for other new and experimental work, check out any of the several theater and performance festivals coming up: the criminal queerness festival, la mama squirts, global forms theater festival, first light 2023, fucked-up play fest, and weasel festival.
music: the events i'm most looking forward to right now are julia wolfe's unearth and robert ashley's perfect lives (for which ryuichi sakamoto and tin drum's kagami could be an interesting contemporary complement). other new music shows i'd love to catch are lamonte young and marian zaleela's just charles, curtis stewart's "of love and time", loadbang's pop-up concert, and the pathos trio's "night of premieres – new works for percussion, piano, and electronics". for two very promising showcases of music, check out the mata festival and the vision festival. for new takes on classic opera, look into onsite opera's il tabarro (on the lightship ambrose!) and the met's don giovanni and die zauberflöte. a wide range of latin music is on offer over the next month, too: the los angeles rainbow mariachi, gregorio uribe, kiki valera y su son cubano, edward simon trio with magos herrera and luis quintero, and ani cordero, among others.
film: just as this year's cannes film festival takes off (everyone should follow via the film comment podcast—the selection looks really strong this year, and victor erice, whose el espíritu de la colmena is essential, has a new feature!), two of last year's highlights are arriving on screen: scarlet (which i cannot wait to see) and will-o'-the-wisp (which i saw at nyff but will happily see again because i'm a pretty ardent rodrigues fan). another film i'm excited to see again (and perhaps more than once) is werckmeister harmonies. other new releases of note include white balls on walls, master gardener (i should get to know schrader's work better), the cow who sang a song into the future, and turning – a film by charles atlas and anohni. among the upcoming series to look into are momi's cheekily organized "queer cinema, top to bottom", newfest's pride edition, metrograph's trio of agnès varda documentaries, film at lincoln center's "open roads: new italian cinema" and, with ifc, "human rights watch film festival", and moma's "the future is female, part 4".
dance: i'm admittedly more drawn to "tanztheater" than ballet, but nycb's contemporary choreography (i and ii) and abt's like water for chocolate have my interest piqued. kyle abraham, a long-time favorite, curates a program of choreographers and composers, and johnnie cruise mercer, whose work i'm eager to get to know, premieres the decade from hell... i've enjoyed much of akram khan's choreographic work (and love him as a dancer), so i'm definitely interested in the new york kathak festival. other shows i'd like to catch include dada masilo and flamenco vivo carlota santana at the joyce, a street dance program and ballet hispánico at city center, john bernd at danspace, yydc at chelsea factory, and celia krefter and kate purdum at the brick.
art: the art market is abuzz right now, and our friends artnet have a handy guide to navigating it all. i'm still hoping to catch the spring museum shows around town but, alas, have not hope of making it to the much-lauded vermeer show in amsterdam—unless i see the screen version at symphony space or the behind-the-scenes documentary at the quad. i'm curious to revisit at least some of matthew barney's the cremaster cycle and to see his new film secondary (and "art bitch" might be just the show to follow those up with). other shows i'd like to see include arthur dove and marsden hartley at alexandre, "kanten 観展: the limits of history" and "defiant visions" at apex art, harris rosenblum at sara's, arthur marie at queer thoughts, bang geul han at the 8th floor, and seung taek lee at canal projects.
