¡hola, difus@s!

very telegraphically, as this issue's getting out much later than planned (we'll go bi-monthly for the rest of the fall / winter season and probably through spring)... as exhilarating as the city's cultural reopening has been, re-entry has been a little draining (but in a good way); moderation has never been my strongest virtue...

among the past month's highlights were a trio of films at nyff (the searingly brilliant bad luck banging, or loony porn, the devastatingly bleak vortex, and mystifyingly deliberate memoria), the mesmerizing (but not quite menacing, as i had expected) sun & sea at bam, and the melancholic "death and shadows" at green-wood cemetery.

this month, i'm quite eager to get some dance and theater into the mix, and the calendar's full of opportunities to do so.

dance: lucinda childs at the joyce will be my first dance performance since february 2020, and i cannot wait—even if that does set an unrealistically high bar for the rest of the season. i'd also like to catch christopher williams at new york live arts, kinzel and shick at roulette, and luciana achugar at the chocolate factory (in collaboration with skirball). other shows worth looking into include hope boykin at 92y, cia suave at bam, company sbb at montclair state, and indigenous enterprise at the joyce.

theater + performance: the wooster group is back on stage at the performing garage with the mother (a learning play), and i've already got my tickets. two other shows i've already booked are bedlam's production of persuasion and tiago rodrigues' by heart. if i can squeeze in more theater, tops on my list are while you were partying at soho rep (another venue i'm delighted to see reopen), between the bars and preparedness at here, and gnit at theatre for a new audience. i'd also be game for seeing i am the gooseking and one empire, under god at the tank, the antelope party at the wild project, or medicine at st. ann's.

music: my heart thrilled to both early music and robert ashley reappear on the calendar, with "palestrina: prince of music" at st. luke's of the fields and el/afcionado at roulette, but there's much more to be excited about: caroline shaw and andrew yee at kaufmann, mary halvorson at the stone, "an american triptych: mazzoli, davis, and adam" at new york philharmonic, the bad plus at joe's pub, nibal malshi & ensemble at roulette, a late night rose program at jazz at lincoln center, amigos de la zarzuela at carnegie hall, and much, much more (below).

film: the highlights from cannes have been arriving much sooner than usual, and two that i'm especially eager to see are drive my car (which i had to miss at nyff) and bad luck banging, or loony porn (again, yes, and maybe twice more). todd haynes' documentary, the velvet underground, is already on screen, as is hamaguchi's earlier wheel of fantasy and fortune. the two sights at anthology, minyan at ifc, malni—towards the ocean, towards the shore at moma, and what do we see when we look at the sky at film at lincoln center are also high on my to-see list. series of note include the lgbtqi+ film festival, "participant at moma/ film and activism", "with music by... a sisters with transistors series", "confessional cinema", and "folk horror".

art: among the museum shows that have recently opened, i really want to see greater new york at moma ps1, bronx calling: the fifth aim biennial at the bronx museum, etel adnan: light's new measure at the guggenheim, and labyrinth of forms: women and abstraction, 1930-1950 at the whitney (along with, yes, the jasper johns show). i'm also quite excited for performa 2021 and put your hands where my eyes can see. gallery shows i'm hoping to catch include sara cwynar at foxy productions, janet cardiff and george bures at luhring augustine, tyler mitchell at jack shainman, leonard drew at galerie lelong, and ron nagle at matthew marks.

there's a LOT more below, and if you'd like to add anyone to the list, you can do so here.

un abrazo,
p
