noviembre + diciembre 2022

¡hola, difus@s!

back in october, i felt like was finally getting back into the swing of things, with a good mix of film (aftersun left me in tears, pacifiction i definitely need to see again—will film at lincoln center please give us an albert serra retrospective soon?—, el houb and ask any buddy were welcome correctives to so much recent american gay film), dance (yvonne rainer's "last dance" was a moving summation of a life's work, unavailable memory: in conversation with cunningham & cage was an uneven but engaging program), and theater (chekov's first play was an inventive take on platonov—though a lot of what made it good wasn't entirely novel). and then work just got in the way of everything (alas, nanomanagement is real...) until this week, that is, with masterz at work (i loved the show but still have mixed feelings about this kind of de- or re-contextualization), eo (delightfully weird, even if my expectations had been raised a bit too high by all the cannes' buzz), and this (now) holiday edition of the boletín.

film: during the winter recess (like summer vacation), i love binging on film, so i'm particularly excited by what's coming to cinemas for the remainder of the year. among the new releases high on my list are the super 8 years, no bears, all the beauty and the bloodshed, pinocchio, and there there (though i don't have strong feelings about mumblecore and haven't seen funny ha ha). also on screen is some "required viewing" that i missed in my 90s college-cinephile days: the draughtman's contract, the garden, and the kingdom (with the first and second parts now complemented by a third). japanese cinema is the subject of three series this month: "hachimiri madness," "ozu," and "yoshimitsu morita." other series of note include the african diaspora international film festival, "in the neighborhood: the films of paweł łoziński," "jean-luc godard (1930-2022)," and "the contenders" (always a good compendium of the year's films).

music: i have a soft spot for holiday music of all kinds (much to my spouse's chagrin), and el niño: nativity reconsidered is precisely the kind i enjoy most. in a similar vein, onsite opera's production of amahl and the night visitors has my interest piqued. if handel's messiah is more your taste, you've got both the ny phil and musica sacra. other classical christmas offerings include "a bach christmas" (with more bach keyboard concertos, the brandenburg concertos, and sonatas, too) and the tallis scholars (with more early music on offer from trio mediæval and julliard415). this year is ending with a phenomenal array of artists on stage: mary margaret o'hara (whose "to cry about" is one of my favorite songs and whose sister is one of my favorite actresses), rebekah heller, shelley hirsch, hélène grimaud, audra macdonald, mary halvorson, and the powerhouse trio of renée fleming, joyce didonato, and kelli o'hara in the hours.

performance + theater: joe's pub has a stellar line-up of performances to close out the year: justin vivian bond (whose holiday shows are a tradition for us), tori scott (whose show title is this year's winner in my book), jane lynch and kate flannery, penny arcade, bridget everett & the tender moments, and sandra bernhard. i'd really love to catch the sneak peak of the gorgeous nothings and to see downstate before it closes. both flight delay and the bandaged place look good (but maybe cut a little too close to the bone for me this time of year). i'm also curious about the weak and the strong (having read the kingdom earlier this year and hoping to read the book of all books sometime in the next), the return of this and that, and eddy izzard's take on dickens.

dance: i really regret missing some of this past month's dance shows, so i'm super excited for rivulets (i'm a tere o'connor fan), underneath the skin, and bloodlines / bloodlines (future). those looking for nutcrackers can go traditional with balanchine's version at new york city ballet or more burlesque with company xiv's. (i've got my fingers crossed for the hard nut and sugar hill next year.) other dance shows worth looking into are ivy baldwin, les trockaderos de monte carlo (always a good time!), and the "30-30-30" showcase.

art: my favorite year-end art event is the december issue of artforum (in print, natch), which has *the* best top 10 lists for film and music along with a great round-up of books, exhibitions, and more. while much of the new york art world is in miami, i'm hoping to see the shows here of betty woodman, bill albertini, bill walton, david lynch, diana thater, frank moore, guillermo kuitca, joan mitchell, louise lawler, rudolf stingel, tony cragg, wael shawky, and william eggleston. later in the month, i'll focus on institutional shows like alex katz, charisse pearlina weston, meret oppenheim, nick cave, refik anadol, spencer finch, theaster gates, and xaviera simmons. somewhere in all that, i'll have to carve out at least half a day for julian rosefeldt's latest spectacle, euphoria.

have a wonderful holiday season and an auspicious start to the new year!

un abrazo,
